Radar fall detection is here: our contactless sensor is now available

After months of development and live testing, we're proud to announce that our radar fall detection and bed exit sensor is now available — installed and supported by Peninsula Smart Care in Melbourne.

The room notices the fall. The nurse call raises it.

A small ceiling-mounted sensor watches the room using 60 GHz millimetre-wave radar — the same low-power sensing technology used in modern cars and smart buildings. There's no camera, no microphone, nothing for a resident to wear or remember, and no pressure mat to slide out of position or wear out.

When a resident leaves their bed and doesn't return, or falls anywhere in the room, a real emergency call is raised on the facility's existing nurse call system within seconds. When they're safely back in bed, the call clears itself — so night staff see the exits that matter, not a log of every roll-over.

What the sensor sees

This is the actual staff view — a top-down radar plot of position and movement, in millimetres. No image is ever captured, because there is no camera to capture one.

A confirmed fall — the target drops to floor height and the emergency call is raised.

Normal monitoring — position, movement trail and the mapped bed zone. This is all the sensor ever sees.

Safety you can't accidentally switch off

The detail we're proudest of: when staff are attending a resident, a bed's routine alerts can be suppressed from the nurse station or a phone — for a set time, or until re-armed. Timed suppressions re-arm automatically and every change is logged. But a genuine fall always breaks through, even while a bed is suppressed. Unlike a pressure mat quietly left unplugged, the radar never stops detecting.

Alerts arrive the same way as every other call — on display boards, call screens, staff phones and pagers — through the Sedco, JCT and other nurse call systems we service across Melbourne every week. There's no separate app or pager to watch.
