Recorders & video management · Melbourne & Victoria
The recorder decides what your cameras can do. Choose it first.
Cameras get the attention, but the recording platform sets the ceiling: which brands you can mix, how you find footage after an incident, what it costs to run in year five, and whether analytics can be added later. We install and support Milestone XProtect, Nx Witness, UniFi Protect and Hikvision NVRs, and run our own detection models on all four.

Takeovers of systems other installers built, credentials permitting
Four ways to record. Each one is right for a different site.
Two are open video management systems that take any camera. Two are ecosystems that work best with their own hardware. The honest answer to "which one" is usually obvious once we know the site, so here is how we describe each to a client.
Milestone XProtect
Denmark · open VMS
The enterprise platform for large and multi-site estates
XProtect is the video management system we deploy where the camera count runs into the hundreds and more than one site or department needs to share it. It records any ONVIF camera, scales from a single server to a federated multi-site estate with failover, has the deepest integration ecosystem in the industry, and is where our analytics push alarms and bookmarks. Licensing is perpetual per camera with an optional care plan; it needs a properly sized server and someone to administer it, which is usually us.

The lighter VMS for a building that already has cameras
Nx does the same core job as Milestone, brand-independent recording over ONVIF and RTSP, in a lighter, faster-to-deploy package that a non-specialist can run day to day. Licences are perpetual per channel with no subscription, it runs on Windows, Linux or ARM, and its object search is a practical way to find an incident without scrubbing a timeline. It is our usual recommendation for a single building of twenty to fifty mixed cameras that nobody wants to replace.

Recording, network and Wi‑Fi in one console, with no licence fees
Protect records to Ubiquiti's own consoles and NVRs and manages the cameras from the same dashboard as the network. There is no per-camera licence and no cloud subscription to keep recording, remote viewing works out of the box, and the interface is the cleanest of the four. The trade-off is the ecosystem: it records UniFi cameras only, so it suits a new fit-out or a site already on UniFi rather than a takeover of someone else's cameras.

A Hikvision NVR is a purpose-built recorder: plug in the cameras, set retention, done. Paired with Hikvision's own recent AI cameras it offers the most impressive incident search of the four, including plain-language queries on the newer models, and it needs no server or IT ownership. It gives its best only with Hikvision cameras, channel counts are fixed per box, and some government and critical-infrastructure procurement rules exclude the brand, so we check that before quoting.

Every platform above records and searches. None of them will tell you, unprompted, that a hard hat is missing at the gate, that the person on the fence line at 2am is a person and not a fox, or that a car in the tenant car park isn't on the list. We train detection models on your own footage and run them on a unit on your network, against the cameras and recorder you already have.

How we choose
Four questions pick the platform before any brochure does.
01
What cameras are already there?
A mixed or inherited fleet points to an open VMS. A blank slate, or a site already on one ecosystem, makes the appliance or UniFi route cheaper and simpler.
02
How many cameras, how many sites?
Under fifty in one building rarely needs Milestone. Hundreds across several sites with a security team rarely suits anything else.
03
Who will own it?
Server-based platforms need updates, storage checks and licence management. If nobody in-house can own that, we do it under a maintenance agreement, or we pick an appliance.
04
What has to happen when something is seen?
If the answer is "an alarm to security, not a search afterwards", the analytics layer matters more than the recorder, and any of the four will carry it.
