Aiphone Intercom Melbourne

Aiphone intercom · Melbourne
Aiphone intercoms — GT, JO or IX? Start with the model on the unit.

Almost everyone who looks Aiphone up is holding a model number — off the monitor on the wall or the panel at the gate. Which series you have decides what can be replaced, what can be added, and whether an upgrade is worth doing at all.

The series matters more than the brand

Aiphone isn't one product — it's several distinct system families that don't freely interchange. A monitor from one series won't simply drop onto another series' wiring, and a quote that ignores which one you have is a quote worth questioning. Work out the series first and everything else gets simpler.

Which Aiphone system are you looking at?

If you're searching a model number, it almost certainly starts with one of these.

JO series

Compact video intercom, typically a single home or small premises — one monitor, one door station, straightforward to service.

JO-1MDW · JO-1MD · JO-DV

GT series

Multi-tenant and apartment entrances — entrance panel with a directory, individual apartment monitors, and a lot of Melbourne buildings running it.

GT-1D · GT-1A · GT-1C7 · GT-1M3

IX & IXG series

IP intercom over the network. IX for commercial and institutional sites, IXG where a multi-tenant building wants the IP version of a GT.

IX-MV7 · IX-DV · IXG

Monitor & station replacement

A failed monitor in one apartment is usually a single-unit job. We match it to the series you already have rather than proposing a rebuild.

Single unit · Like-for-like

Fault diagnosis

No picture, no audio, door release not firing, one unit dead or the whole entrance down — we find which before anyone quotes a replacement.

Repair first

Access control & gates

Intercom tied to door release, gate automation and card or fob access so residents, staff and deliveries run on one system.

Working out what you've got

The model number is printed on the unit — usually on the back or underside of an indoor monitor, and on the rear plate or inside the housing of an entrance panel. The prefix is the part that matters:

  • Starts with JO — a compact video system, almost always a single dwelling. Repairs and like-for-like replacements are usually simple.
  • Starts with GT — a multi-tenant system. There will be an entrance panel with a directory and a monitor in each apartment, so anything you change has building-wide implications.
  • Starts with IX or IXG — an IP system running over network cabling rather than dedicated intercom wiring. Different install, different fault-finding, and it can integrate far more deeply with other systems.
Why we ask for the model before quoting

Series compatibility is the single most expensive thing to get wrong on an intercom job. A quote written without knowing which system is on the wall is either padded to cover the unknown or is about to hit a surprise. Send a photo of the model label and we can usually tell you what's compatible before anyone visits.

One unit or the whole building?

In a multi-tenant building the answer changes the cost by an order of magnitude. One apartment with no picture is nearly always that apartment's monitor or its wiring. A whole entrance down points at the entrance panel or its power supply. Neither of those is a reason to replace every monitor in the block — and if you've been quoted as though it is, that's worth a second opinion.

Is it worth moving to IP?

Sometimes, and not because IP is newer. It's worth it when the building actually needs what IP gives you: multiple entrances behaving as one system, integration with access control and CCTV, or remote administration so a resident change doesn't need a site visit. If none of those apply and the existing wiring is sound, a like-for-like repair is usually the better spend. We'll tell you which case you're in.

Strata, apartments and mixed-use

Most GT-series work is owners corporation work, which brings its own constraints — quotes a committee can read, staged replacement across budget years, and access arranged around residents. We also handle common-area CCTV for the same buildings, and can tie the intercom to access control so there's one credential list rather than three.

Aiphone or Urmet?

These two turn up in Melbourne buildings more than any other intercom brands, and we service both. If yours is an Urmet, our Urmet intercom brief covers the same ground. For the general picture, see our intercom systems page.

Where Aiphone fits — and where to take care

Why Peninsula Smart Care

We ask which model before we quote a price

We're a licensed Melbourne electronic security and communications integrator. We install and service intercom systems across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, and much of that work is systems someone else installed and nobody has supported since.

Because we also install access control, CCTV and gate automation, we can tell you whether your entry problem is an intercom problem at all — and if replacement is genuinely due, we'll show the reasoning. See our full intercom service.

  • Licensed Victorian security installer
  • Repairs and takeovers of systems we didn't install
  • Strata and owners corporation experience
  • Intercom, access control, CCTV and gates under one contractor
