Why we're building it
The problem with pressure mats
Sensor mats wear out, slide out of position, false-alarm when residents shift their weight, and get unplugged during cleaning. They're the most replaced item in many facilities — and the alert often comes only after the resident is already standing. We supply and install sensor mats today, so we know exactly where they fall short.
How radar changes it
A small mmWave radar sensor monitors presence and movement in the bed area from the wall or ceiling. It's designed to recognise a resident sitting up and leaving the bed — giving staff an earlier prompt to respond, with nothing touching the resident or the bed.
How it works
The sensor monitors the bed area continuously. When a resident sits up and exits, the alert is raised through the nurse call system — the same way as any other call.
Staff stay in control
Part of the system we're developing: when staff are attending a resident, the bed can be suppressed from the nurse station or a phone — for a set time, or until staff re-arm it. Timed suppressions re-arm automatically, every change is logged with a name and time, and the radar never stops detecting. No more mats quietly left unplugged.
Falls prevention support, not another gadget
Falls remain one of the most serious risks in aged care and hospital settings, and bed exits are where many of them start. Bed exit sensing doesn't replace a falls prevention program — good assessment, staffing and environment design do the heavy lifting — but the right sensor gives staff earlier notice for the residents who need it most: overnight, post-surgery, or during high-risk periods after a change in medication or mobility.

What is a radar bed exit sensor?
It's a small sensor that uses mmWave radar — the same low-power sensing technology used in modern cars and smart buildings — to detect presence and movement in the bed area. Instead of a mat that reacts to weight, radar watches for the movement pattern of someone sitting up and leaving the bed, and raises an alert through the nurse call system.
How is it different from a pressure mat or sensor mat?
Pressure mats are consumables: they wear, drift out of position, and trigger false alarms as residents move in bed. A radar sensor mounts on the wall or ceiling, touches nothing, and has no parts that wear out in normal use. It's also designed to alert earlier — as the resident begins to exit, not once their full weight lands on a mat. Does it use a camera? What about privacy?
No camera. Radar sensing detects movement and presence, not images — there is nothing to record or view. That makes it suitable for bedrooms and bathrooms where cameras are inappropriate.
Can staff pause alerts while they're attending a resident?
Yes — that's designed in, safely. Staff can suppress a bed's alerts from a web panel at the nurse station or on a phone — for a set time, or until they re-arm it. Timed suppressions expire and re-arm automatically, the bed shows an attended state while suppression is active, and every change is logged with who made it and when. The radar itself never stops detecting.
Will it work with our existing nurse call system?
That's the core design goal. Peninsula Smart Care services Sedco, JCT and other nurse call systems across Melbourne, and the sensor is being built to deliver its alerts through the systems facilities already run — so bed exit alerts arrive exactly like any other call.
