UniFi Protect Cameras for Business
UniFi Protect is our go-to camera platform for small and medium business. It’s US-designed by Ubiquiti, records locally on your own hardware, carries no licensing or subscription fees at any scale, and runs on the same UniFi ecosystem we use for your network — cameras, doors, switching and Wi-Fi from one console.
Our go-to camera platform for small & medium business.
No per-camera licences, no monthly cloud fees, footage kept on your own recorder, and one console for cameras, doors, network and Wi-Fi. It’s the option we reach for when a business wants a system that’s predictable to run and clean to manage.
Why UniFi works for business
Six reasons it’s our default recommendation for SMB sites.
No ongoing fees
No subscriptions, no paid AI add-ons, no per-camera licensing. You buy the hardware and that’s it — run four cameras or four hundred.
Local recording
Video is stored on-site on your own UNVR, keeps working through an internet outage, and isn’t uploaded to a third-party cloud.
On-camera AI included
Person, vehicle and package detection (and licence-plate recognition on higher models) run on the hardware you already bought.
One console for everything
Cameras, door access, network and Wi-Fi in a single interface — not a stack of disconnected systems and logins.
Scales cleanly
Start with a handful of cameras and add more, or more sites, without changing platform.
Secure remote access
View live and recorded video from anywhere over an encrypted connection, while the footage itself never leaves your hardware.
The origin & compliance advantage
This is the flip side of the Hikvision and Dahua conversation. UniFi is designed by a US company and is NDAA-compliant, so it doesn’t carry the country-of-origin, government-removal or supply-chain baggage that has seen Chinese-made cameras stripped from sensitive sites in Australia, the US, the UK and Canada.
For a business that tenders for government or enterprise work, has a supply-chain policy, or simply wants the least politically complicated option over the next five to ten years, that matters — and it’s a big part of why we lean on UniFi for those clients. Read our take on Hikvision and the ban question.
No per-camera licences and no monthly cloud fees — the software cost is zero at any scale. Footage records locally on your own NVR, so total cost of ownership is predictable and your video stays yours. And because it’s US-designed and NDAA-compliant, it sidesteps the origin and procurement questions that follow Chinese-made brands.
One ecosystem: cameras, doors, network & Wi-Fi
The real advantage of UniFi for a growing business is that it isn’t just cameras. The same platform runs UniFi Access door control, your switching and PoE, and your Wi-Fi — so a badge swipe at the door can be tied to a video clip of the person entering, and the whole site is managed from one place. As an integrator we install that full stack, which means fewer vendors, one accountable point of contact, and a system that actually works together rather than four products bolted side by side.
UniFi Access: cameras and door entry, one console
UniFi Access is Ubiquiti’s door entry and access control hardware — card, fob, PIN and mobile credential readers that live in the same app as your UniFi Protect cameras. Because both run on one platform, a door swipe and the camera clip of that entry sit side by side, and adding or revoking a user’s access takes seconds rather than a phone call to a locksmith. It’s a natural pairing with UniFi Protect for any site that already wants cameras and is weighing up access control at the same time. If you need broader access control — including non-UniFi hardware, biometric readers or multi-site rollouts — see our full access control service for a tailored quote.
Choosing the right UniFi NVR
UniFi Protect cameras record to a UniFi NVR (network video recorder) or Cloud Gateway on-site, not to a subscription cloud. Which model you need comes down to camera count, resolution and retention period — get the storage sizing wrong and you either run out of days of footage or pay for drive capacity you’ll never use. We size and configure the NVR as part of every install, so retention matches what the site actually needs from day one.
Where UniFi fits — and where to consider alternatives
Where UniFi fits
- Small and medium business, single or multi-site
- Offices, retail, clinics, warehouses & body-corporate common areas
- Sites already on (or ready for) UniFi networking
- Buyers who want zero ongoing camera fees
- Procurement-sensitive businesses avoiding Chinese-origin gear
Where to consider alternatives
- Very large enterprise sites needing a specialised third-party VMS
- Existing multi-brand camera estates you don’t want to replace
- Extensive solar/battery cameras or specialised PTZ auto-tracking
- Environments locked into a non-UniFi network that won’t change
UniFi rewards being installed properly
The software is friendly, but the infrastructure underneath — cabling, PoE switching, VLAN segmentation, storage sizing and secure remote access — is what makes footage reliable and the network safe.
We design the camera layout to the site and its lighting, size the recorder storage to the retention you need, segment the cameras off your main network, and set up remote access without opening holes in your firewall. Then we support it — and with no licence fees in the mix, that means genuinely predictable running costs.
- Designed, cabled and configured to the site — not just plugged in
- Cameras segmented off your main network for security
- Storage sized to the retention you actually need
- No licence fees — predictable running costs
