Hikvision vs Dahua: Which CCTV Brand Is Better?

CCTV Comparison · 2026

Hikvision vs Dahua — an installer's honest comparison.

Hikvision and Dahua are the two biggest CCTV manufacturers in the world, and we install both every week across Melbourne. Here's how they actually compare on image quality, smart detection, deterrence, apps and price — and which one suits your property.

We install bothNo brand allegianceReal-world experienceFree advice

The short answer: both are excellent — the right choice depends on your property

At equivalent tiers, Hikvision and Dahua are closer than any spec sheet suggests. Where they genuinely differ is in specific features — active deterrence, low-light tech, apps — and those differences are what should drive your decision, not brand loyalty.

Hikvision vs Dahua, category by category

Based on installing and servicing both brands across Melbourne homes and businesses.

Image quality & low light

At the same tier and resolution, image quality is effectively a tie. Hikvision's ColorVu and Dahua's Full-Colour lines both deliver genuine colour footage at night.

Verdict: tie

Smart detection

Hikvision AcuSense and Dahua SMD both classify people and vehicles to cut false alerts. Both work well in the real world when set up properly.

Verdict: tie

Active deterrence

Dahua's TiOC range — red-and-blue strobes, sirens and voice warnings that trigger on detection — is the standout here. Hikvision has equivalents, but TiOC is the more mature package.

Verdict: Dahua

Apps & remote viewing

Hik-Connect (Hikvision) vs DMSS (Dahua). Both are solid; Hik-Connect is slightly more polished and familiar to more users. Neither will frustrate you day to day.

Verdict: Hikvision, narrowly

Range & pricing

Both offer everything from entry-level to enterprise. At equivalent spec, Dahua often lands slightly cheaper; Hikvision's overall range is slightly broader.

Verdict: Dahua on price, Hikvision on range

Ecosystem & installer support

Hikvision has the larger installer base in Australia, which matters for long-term serviceability. Dahua's local distribution and support are also strong.

Verdict: Hikvision, narrowly

The longer answer

Hikvision and Dahua are the world's #1 and #2 CCTV manufacturers, and much of the industry — including many house brands you'd never connect to them — runs on their hardware. That scale is why both offer strong technology at prices smaller brands can't match.

Where the real differences show up

For a typical home or business, the decision usually comes down to two or three practical questions. If you want visible deterrence — cameras that actively warn intruders off with strobes and sirens rather than just recording them — Dahua TiOC is the strongest offering either brand makes. If you want the most established ecosystem, the broadest product range, and the app most people already know, Hikvision edges it. On pure image quality at the same price point, you will struggle to tell the footage apart.

What about the government ban?

You may have read that Australian government departments removed Hikvision and Dahua cameras from their buildings in 2023. That decision applied to both brands equally and related to government facilities and data-sovereignty policy — it doesn't restrict private homes or businesses, where both brands remain the most widely installed in the country. For installations we complete, systems are configured on your local network with sensible security settings, and we're happy to talk through the details if it's a concern for you.

The honest installer take

We install both, we service both, and we don't earn more from one than the other. If a customer asks us to pick, we ask about the property first: deterrence-focused? TiOC. Larger system, mixed camera types, or matching existing gear? Often Hikvision. Tight budget at a given spec? Compare Dahua's quote. Both are a genuinely good decision — the wrong decision is a no-name kit from a marketplace seller with no support behind it.

Which brand suits your property?

Choose Hikvision if…

  • You want the largest ecosystem & product range
  • You're expanding or matching an existing Hikvision system
  • App familiarity & polish matter to you
  • You want maximum long-term installer serviceability

Choose Dahua if…

  • Visible deterrence is the priority — TiOC strobes & sirens
  • You want the sharpest price at a given spec
  • Full-colour night vision on a budget
  • You're matching an existing Dahua system
Why ask an installer, not a spec sheet

We install and service both brands across Melbourne

Spec sheets don't tell you how a camera handles a dark side path in Beaumaris or a glary shopfront in Frankston. We design around your property first, then pick the brand and models that fit — with full handover, training and ongoing support either way.

  • Authorised installation of Hikvision & Dahua
  • No brand allegiance — property-first recommendations
  • Free on-site assessments and written quotes
  • Servicing & support for both brands

Hikvision vs Dahua — common questions

Is Hikvision or Dahua better?

At equivalent tiers, neither is clearly better overall. Dahua leads on active deterrence (TiOC) and often on price; Hikvision leads narrowly on ecosystem, range and app polish. Image quality at the same spec is effectively a tie — the right choice depends on your property and priorities.

Are Hikvision and Dahua the same company?

No — they're separate companies, and the world's two largest CCTV manufacturers. Both also supply hardware to many other brands, which is why so many camera systems look and behave similarly.

Is it legal to install Hikvision or Dahua in Australia?

Yes. The 2023 removals applied to Australian government buildings as a policy decision, and applied to both brands equally. There's no restriction on private homes or businesses, where both remain the most widely installed brands in the country.

Can you mix Hikvision and Dahua cameras on one system?

Technically yes via ONVIF, but you lose some smart features when mixing brands, so we generally recommend keeping a system single-brand. If you're extending an existing system, we'll match what you have.

Which is cheaper — Hikvision or Dahua?

At equivalent specifications Dahua often comes in slightly cheaper, but pricing shifts by model and promotion. We quote both where it's a close call so you can compare like for like.
