Most video management systems want you to buy their cameras. Nx Witness doesn't. It records any ONVIF camera, whatever the brand, whatever the age — which makes it the platform we reach for when a site has an inherited or mixed camera fleet and no appetite to replace it.
What is Nx Witness, and who is it actually for?
Nx Witness is a video management system — the software layer that discovers, records, displays and manages IP cameras. It sits where an NVR normally would, except it runs on a server you own rather than a sealed appliance, and it doesn't care which manufacturer made the cameras.
That last point is the whole reason to consider it. If you're specifying a system from scratch and buying all the cameras at once, an appliance from a single manufacturer is usually simpler and cheaper. Nx earns its place on the other job: the building that already has twenty or thirty cameras, bought at different times from different brands, that nobody wants to rip out.
What Nx Witness actually gives you
Six things that decide whether it's the right platform for a site.
Any camera brand
ONVIF and RTSP cameras from any manufacturer, mixed freely on one system. No brand lock-in and no requirement that the cameras be recent.
Perpetual licensing
Licences are bought per channel and owned outright rather than rented. No recurring subscription is required to keep recording, which matters when a committee has to approve the budget every year.
Runs on your hardware
Windows, Linux or ARM, on a server sized for the site rather than a fixed-channel appliance. Storage, redundancy and retention are yours to specify.
Object search
Filter recorded video by detected objects and their attributes instead of scrubbing a timeline — the practical answer to "find the incident" without watching hours of footage.
AI on existing streams
Analytics plugins and custom detection models can be run against cameras that have no AI capability of their own, because the processing happens on the server rather than in the camera.
Granular user access
Different people see different cameras with different rights — useful where a building manager, a committee and a facilities contractor all need access, but not the same access.
Can Nx Witness use my existing cameras?
Usually, yes. Nx discovers and records cameras over ONVIF and RTSP, which virtually every IP camera made in the last decade supports. Brand and age matter far less here than they do with a manufacturer's own recorder, where AI features are typically restricted to that manufacturer's recent camera lines.
Three things decide whether a retrofit is straightforward, and all three are checked on site rather than guessed:
- IP or analogue. Nx needs a network stream. Analogue cameras on coaxial cable can still be kept, but they need encoders, and that cost belongs in the quote from the start.
- Credentials. ONVIF has to be enabled on each camera with a valid user. On buildings where the original installer holds the passwords and won't release them, this is the single most common thing that stalls a takeover.
- Resolution and codec. Older cameras stream at lower resolutions and sometimes use vendor-specific codec variants. Both are usually workable; both occasionally aren't.
What AI video search does — and what it doesn't
This is worth being precise about, because the marketing around AI video search has run well ahead of what the products do.
What Nx provides is object search: detected objects and their attributes become searchable metadata, so you can filter recorded footage to people or vehicles and narrow by attributes such as clothing colour, then jump straight to those moments. With a good analytics plugin the attribute set gets quite rich. For the job people actually need — finding the relevant few minutes after an incident, without watching six hours — it works.
What it is not is a free-text search box where you type a sentence and the system finds it. Some manufacturer NVRs now offer that, running a multimodal model on the recorder itself, and it demonstrates beautifully. The trade is that those systems generally require that manufacturer's own recent cameras to do it. You are choosing between a better search experience on new cameras, and a good search experience on the cameras you already own.
AI search accuracy depends on pixel density on the target, not on the software. A 2MP camera covering a wide car park will not reliably resolve a person's clothing colour no matter which platform is behind it. On a retrofit we'll tell you which camera positions will search well and which won't — that assessment matters more than the choice of platform.
Nx Witness or Milestone XProtect?
Both are open, brand-independent platforms, and either will record a mixed camera fleet. The difference is weight. Milestone XProtect scales into very large, multi-site estates with sophisticated failover, centralised management and a deep integration ecosystem, and it is priced and administered accordingly. Nx is lighter, quicker to deploy, cheaper per channel, and easier for a non-specialist to operate day to day.
For a single building of twenty to fifty cameras, Nx is usually the better fit and Milestone is more platform than the site needs. Past a few hundred cameras across multiple sites with a dedicated security team, that reverses. We work with both, including enterprise estates running several hundred cameras, so the recommendation isn't a function of what we happen to sell.
What does it cost to run?
Licences are per camera channel and owned outright, so there is no ongoing software subscription to renew. The costs people underestimate are the ones either side of the licence: a server sized for the channel count and retention period, storage for the days of footage you're obliged to keep, and — if AI analytics are in scope — enough processing capability to run detection continuously rather than occasionally.
Because it is server-based rather than an appliance, a VMS also needs someone to own it. On sites without in-house IT, we cover that under a maintenance agreement: updates, health monitoring, storage checks and licence management. A platform nobody maintains is worse than a simpler system that somebody does.
Owners corporations and strata buildings, multi-tenant commercial sites, and any building that has accumulated cameras over a decade from three different installers. What is Nx Witness?
Nx Witness is a video management system from Network Optix. It records, displays and manages IP cameras from any manufacturer over the ONVIF standard, running on a server rather than a fixed-channel appliance. It is used in place of an NVR where a site needs brand independence, tiered user access, or more control over storage and retention than an appliance allows.
Will Nx Witness work with the cameras I already have?
In most cases yes. Any IP camera that supports ONVIF or RTSP can be recorded, regardless of brand or age, which is the main reason to choose it over a manufacturer's own recorder. The exceptions are analogue cameras, which need encoders to produce a network stream, and cameras whose ONVIF credentials are unavailable. Both are established on site before we quote.
Does Nx Witness do AI video search?
It provides object search — detected objects and their attributes become searchable, so recorded footage can be filtered to people or vehicles and narrowed further by attributes such as clothing colour. It is not a free-text search box where you type a sentence in plain English; that capability currently requires specific manufacturers' recorders paired with their own recent AI cameras. For locating an incident quickly, object search does the job.

Nx Witness or Milestone XProtect — which should we use?
For a single building of roughly twenty to fifty cameras, Nx is generally the better fit: lighter, faster to deploy and cheaper per channel. Milestone XProtect is the stronger choice for large multi-site estates with dedicated security staff, where its failover, centralised administration and integration depth earn their cost. We work with both.
Can you take over a system another company installed?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. The practical requirement is access — administrator credentials for the existing cameras and recorder. Where the previous installer holds those and won't release them, there are usually recovery paths, but they should be identified before works are scheduled rather than on the day.
